Learning from legends at the Future Place conference

With great anticipation and excitement, we welcomed back the Future Place conference at the Dallas Ritz-Carlton earlier this month. Future Place is the must-attend event for developers, builders, architects, and engineers to discuss all aspects of master-planned communities and all the elements involved that make them successful—from finance to management, to design and development. This event is an opportunity to come together to network and learn about what’s happening in the industry.

This year’s event featured high-level panels and intriguing discussions including topics on critical trends, economic outlook, urban revival, and land development. Attendees heard about the future of urban residential and mixed-use developments and learned about the competitive environment of land acquisition, entitlement and zoning, and where to invest. Some of our featured speakers included Alison Novak, Head of Sidewalk Urban Development at Sidewalk Labs, Mike Berry, President at Hillwood, Jeff Foster, Principal at GGLO, and Nikki Moore, Partner at ECM Development.

Larry Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Johnson Development and one of Houston’s largest real estate developers, was bestowed the Legends Award, which “honors those whose careers have been dedicated to the development of first-class planned communities,” according to BUILDER magazine.

Johnson was honored at the conference and was featured on the cover of the October edition of BUILDER magazine and with the feature story “Land Cultivator” by Lydia Lee. His beloved community Harvest Green in Richmond, TX is a farmland oasis where community members can enjoy the 1,300-acre “agrihood” with fresh produce, edible landscapes, livestock, and even a 12-acre farm. The full-stop community is just one of Johnson’s many successes. The company also has communities in Atlanta, Austin, and the Dallas Fort-Worth area, all of which feature an attractive array of amenities, town centers, and lifestyle directors. With a big heart for people, community, and beautiful homes, it is easy to see why Johnson was chosen to be the recipient of the prestigious Legends Award.
